TED Countdown: Overcoming Dilemmas in the Green Transition

Countdown Dilemma Sessions
Countdown Dilemma Sessions

October 29-30, 2024 | The EGG - Brussels, Belgium

The transition to a sustainable global economy is urgent, messy and uncertain. Whilst a growing majority of people understand why we need to change, how we do so is much harder. Amidst pressure to show win-win solutions that can leave some people feeling left behind, this TED Countdown gathering is designed to help leaders at the heart of the green transition to tip the balance in this decisive decade.

  • In the face of roadblocks, how do we build upon remarkable (often under-reported) stories of success?
  • How do we create the industries of the future without igniting new environmental and societal crises?
  • Who is leading in the transition, what are the surprising wins underway, and what can we learn from them?

Breakthrough Sessions

InnSaei: How to shift your center of gravity for greater climate impact

Facilitator: Hrund Gunnsteinsdóttir

In a world characterized by speed, stress and information overflow, the simple act of connecting within can seem daunting. And yet, shifting our own center of gravity can enable us to make the changes we want to see in the world. Through this meditative workshop, we invite you to explore InnSæi — the Iceland art of intuition — with author and filmmaker Hrund Gunnsteinsdóttir, who’ll share a method designed to help you optimize your agency, mental agility, energy and intuition.

From division to decarbonization: how political identity shapes climate action

Facilitator: Laur Hesse Fischer

Achieving ambitious and lasting carbon policy hinges on bipartisan support — but how can we overcome our deep political divides on climate change? Join DEPLOY/US’s Laur Hesse Fisher, host of MIT’s climate change podcast, for an interactive session that blends insights from political science, psychology, sociology and communications with an examination of political right perspectives on climate action. Leave with a better understanding of why and how to engage all voices to achieve decarbonization.

Walking the tightrope: shaping EU industrial policy to protect the planet while ensuring economic opportunity

Facilitator: Helen Spence-Jackson

Join a discussion about what measures (policies, funding and incentives) are needed from the incoming European Commission for the EU to effectively implement the EU Clean Industrial Deal. Led by Helen Spence-Jackson at EDF, you’ll explore the perspectives of companies and policymakers as they navigate the balance between the development of green solutions, economic opportunity and industrial decarbonization.

There will be no Just Transition without youth justice

Facilitators: Joshua Amponsem, Sophie Lambin

Businesses, policymakers and NGOs are realizing there can be no Green Transition unless it’s a Just Transition. They’re now turning their attention to employees and supply chains to understand the social implications of net zero. But how do we better understand young people as an affected community when the conditions for a Just Transition alter depending on whether you’re in London or Lagos?  Led by Joshua Amponsem of Youth Climate Justice Fund and Sophie Lambin of Kite Insights, this intergenerational workshop will redefine and re-examine the concept of a Just Transition, drawing out the wisdom and insight of young people to shape and deliver solutions that work for all.

Navigating dilemmas: a model for complex conversations

Facilitators: Yasu Mali, Darya Shaikh

When faced with an urgent existential challenge like climate change, how do we focus on solutions without getting caught in zero-sum thinking and diluted compromises? Join Leaders’ Quest practitioners Yasu Mali and Darya Shaikh to explore your pressing challenges. Learn a powerful model that explores how to navigate competing value tensions and identify pathways for progress despite differences.

Writing a new energy transition narrative

Facilitator: Kenneth Matthews

Imagine a world powered by affordable clean energy, with widespread support of that brighter future. Yet, we’re falling short of making this vision universal. How can we bridge the gap and overcome ‘Not In MY Backyard’ (NIMBY) attitudes?  Led by Orsted energy transition expert Kenneth Matthews, this session will map what a clean energy transition might look like and explore the challenge of crafting a compelling narrative of the energy transition. In small groups, you will develop messages that resonate with local communities and foster broader support.

Road to COP 30 in Brazil: Building a movement of possibility

Facilitators: Fiona Macklin,  Matthew Phillips

The next 12 months leading up to COP 30 are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to galvanize living rooms, board rooms and cabinet rooms to protect the people and places we love. Led by Groundswell and Mission 2025 partners, you’ll explore the key stories and voices needed over the next year to fuel rapid progress toward a global tipping point in Belém. Together we can catalyze a mindset shift from ‘we can’t’ to ‘we can, and we are.’

Becoming a climate ‘unsticker’: how neuroscience can help you break through complex climate challenges

Facilitators: Dr. Kris De Meyer, Dr. Lucy Hubble-Rose

For most people working on climate change, there comes a point where they feel stuck, and the challenge of taking climate action feels intractable. Join Kris De Meyer and Lucy Hubble-Rose as they open their “unsticking toolbox” and share a set of insights and approaches designed to help you overcome your climate challenges. Come prepared to share a specific challenge you’re experiencing in your work and learn to build your sense of agency, enabling you to plot your next moves.

Scaling finance for net-zero

Facilitators: Nigel Topping, Riddhima Yadav

To keep the goals of the Paris Agreement within reach, we need to mobilize finance at speed and scale. Several critical barriers have slowed progress so far. These systemic barriers, if solved, can help close the funding gap running into trillions. Come together to explore specific barriers in mobilizing the trillions and hear from practitioners who are actively involved in solving those problems.

Seven practices to advance radical collaboration

Facilitator: Melanie Jamieson

Making progress on climate requires diverse stakeholders to work together — across sectors, industries and countries — despite differences. Led by Leaders’ Quest Co-Chief Executive Melanie Jamieson, you’ll build on The Radical Collaboration Guidebook and explore your experiences and challenges with collaboration. Bring your personal live examples of collaboration to discover how you can overcome obstacles and build effective alliances with diverse groups to produce better results.

1.5° Overshoot: risks and new dilemmas

Facilitator: James Dyke, Laurie Laybourn

The majority of climate scientists no longer believe we can limit warming to 1.5°C  and efforts to do so now depend on the concept of overshoot, which is increasingly relying on carbon removal to lower temperatures by 2100. What if this does not work? What if increasing climate impacts beyond 1.5°C of warming splinters the consensus on how best to respond to human-caused climate change? This workshop, led by University of Exeter Associate Professor James Dyke and Chatham House’s Laurie Laybourn, will address the risks associated with overshoot and explore different perspectives on how to best communicate the evidence of heading to a much warmer world with severe consequences. Together, we will consider how we can engage stakeholders, develop new narratives, and identify opportunities for reinforcing rapid action in overshoot scenarios.

Power hour: Deepen and expand your network

Facilitator: Leader's Quest

A significant reason that you attend TED Countdown is to meet other incredible attendees. Join us for a professional speed-networking session to foster meaningful connections with other participants. In a series of structured, concise conversations guided by Leaders’ Quest facilitators, you'll engage with fellow attendees and have the chance to react to the stage sessions and discuss what’s on your mind and what’s giving you energy.

Trust circle: Building a bridge between inner and outer transformation

Facilitator: Elise Buckle

The Green Transition requires a conscious shift in individual and collective mindsets alongside the required shifts in economic and production systems; it entails a societal shift touching on ethics, inner and outer transformations, emotions and our notions of success and progress. To enact this transition, we must build a bridge between the external and internal transformation required. Come together for a deep dialogue alongside other climate practitioners, facilitated by climate leader Elise Buckle. Create  space for deep connection, exploring the grief and opportunity that comes with working in climate and leave feeling deeply aware and regenerated.
